Any suggestions on what to do if conformer irritates eye? We have tried 3 times.

My 13 month old daugher has Unilateral Microphthalmia. We have tried a conformer 3 times and her eye became irritated, red and swollen within 2-3 days. The first 2 times she even had cold systems, such as a runny nose and became very lethargic. The 3rd time was with a different ocularist and was not as extreme, but she still experienced irritation that caused redness and swelling. Has anyone else experienced this? Any thoughts or suggestions?

I posted this question to the MAPS group on Facebook. Here was one reply:

"Zoey began wearing conformers at 2 weeks old. Her eyes become very red and swollen and we were told to use lubricating drops and her eye Dr prescribed bacitracin."

The MAPS group is for parents of kids with anophthalmia and microphthalmia. It's a great place to get answers!

Brenda says it was tough emotionally for her and her daughter Zoey to deal with the conformers but it's gotten easier over time. You can email her if you want to talk to her directly: Brendab102167@gmail.com

I'm sure she's got a lot of advice since she's dealt with this very same issue!

Hi, I am not sure where you are located but we have an amazing doctor in Dallas Tx. He has over 30 years experience and people come from all over the U.S. to see him. My 7 month old twins have bilateral anophthalmia (1 has micro and aphthalmia in the other eye)and have the conformers. His name is dr. Trawnik and you can find him at dallaseye.net. Even if you don't' live close I think you could call and he may be able to talk to you about possible recommendations.
