Advanced Cell Technology, located in Worcester Massachusetts, reported the results of a long-term study on the safety and efficacy of using human embryonic stem cells to combat retinal diseases like age-related macular degeneration and Stargardt disease.

According to the study, human embryonic stem cells are indeed safe when used to derive retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) which can then be used as a transplant in clinical trials. This is very promising news!
