The bionic eye, or retinal microchip as it's also known, has been making great strides in Europe.
Doctors reported in November that they were having great success with a temporary chip in Germany and in December British doctors announced that they would begin trials with permanent chips.
Retinal chips are first being implanted in patients with retinitis pigmentosa and are "packed with 1,500 light sensors designed to replace those in the retina." They also hope that these chips will benefit patients with macular degeneration.
