  • If you have limited space, a small kitchen, or just don’t want to have a high chair out all the time, a folding high chair is a good option.
  • Folding high chairs have many of the same features as traditional high chairs, even though they can fold to be compact.
  • It’s important to keep safety in mind when using folding high chairs to prevent accidents.

High chairs are a baby gear essential. They make it easier to safely wean, feed, and supervise your baby around food. They also make it easier to contain and clean up the inevitable messes that are part of baby feeding time.

However, a traditional high chair can be bulky and take up a lot of space in your kitchen or dining room. In addition, high chair legs are often set wide apart for sturdiness and safety, so they often get in the way when you’re not using them.

If you’re low on space or just don’t want your baby’s high chair on display all the time, a foldable high chair is a perfect solution. Foldable high chairs are also great for travel. Just fold and go.

Check out our guide to the best folding high chairs of 2023 to help you find the right chair for your little one.

Munchkin Float Easy Clean Foldable Baby High Chair: Best Overall

Munchkin Float Easy Clean Foldable Baby High Chair
  • No-tool assembly – high chair comes together in minutes
  • Foldable legs for easy storage
  • Tray hooks onto back of chair when not in use
  • One-piece seat design wipes clean easily
Pros
Cons
  • Truly easy to clean, one-piece seat.
  • Attractive modern design.
  • Compact fold.
  • Weight maximum of 33 pounds, so doesn’t have great longevity for toddlers.

One of parents’ number one concerns with high chairs, besides safety, is getting them clean. While many high chairs claim to be easy to clean, the Munchkin Float Easy Clean Foldable Baby High Chair really is.

The molded plastic seat just has to be wiped down for cleaning and will always look attractive, no matter what your baby throws at it! No hidden crevices or cracks to trap food. No dingy seating pads that can’t be removed and won’t get clean.

The Munchkin Float has a sleek, minimalist, modern design. No tools are required to assemble it; you can easily fold it and put it away, taking up little precious storage space.

It keeps babies and toddlers safe with a five-point harness, so you don’t have to worry about them slipping out of the chair.

The removable tray cleverly attaches to the back of the legs when not in use. The removable tray also means you can easily push the chair up to the table for use as a booster seat when your child is old enough.

Although your child may outgrow this faster than some of the other chairs on this list, this one will do a great job at a reasonable price for the crucial stage when you need a high chair.

Cosco Simple Fold: Best Budget Folding High Chair

Sale
Cosco Simple Fold
  • Folds flat and stands on its own, making it easy to hide away or take on the go
  • Easy wipe seat makes all that baby goo simple to clean
  • No-nonsense design sets up in just seconds
  • Full size, 3-position adjustable tray with built in cup holder
Pros
Cons
  • Wipeable seat pad.
  • Folds flat and stands independently when folded.
  • Good price.
  • Seat position is not adjustable.
  • Seat padding is not removable for washing.

Sometimes simple is best. The Cosco Simple Fold does everything you need a high chair to do, plus it folds flat for easy storage or travel. When folded, it also stands, making it more convenient for storing.

However, the seat of this high chair is not adjustable. Some parents have found that the angle of the recline means it’s not ideal as a high chair for baby-led weaning since your child can’t sit straight up to eat.

In addition, while the seat cover can be wiped down, some parents would prefer it to be removable and machine washable.

At this price point, though, many parents highly rate the convenience and easy-to-fold aspect of the Cosco Simple Fold. This might be a good spare high chair to keep at grandma’s house or throw in the trunk when travelling.

Joovy Nook NB High Chair: Best Folding High Chair for Baby’s Comfort

Joovy Nook NB High Chair
  • 3-POSITION RECLINING SEAT allows your little one to be right with you in the kitchen, making this an ideal high chair for babies and toddlers
  • FRONT WHEELS to help you move the chair to exactly where you need it
  • ONE-HANDED TRAY OPENING so you don’t have to worry about lining up rails to attach the tray to the baby high chair. Simply swing the tray into place using one hand before dinner is served
  • DISHWASHER-SAFE TRAY INSERT makes cleaning this high chair for toddlers a breeze! Just pop the tray insert in the dishwasher
Pros
Cons
  • Adjustable for newborns up to age 5.
  • No assembly required.
  • Folds flat.
  • Expensive.
  • Leatherette cover is not removable or machine washable.
  • Straps are not easy to clean.

The Joovy Nook NB High Chair is an attractive, super easy fold option to see your child through from newborn feeding to age 5.

Its three reclining positions mean comfort for your baby. In addition, it has a maximum weight of 50 pounds, so there’s plenty of room to grow for your toddler.

The swing-out tray is a nice feature, making it much easier to seat your baby and take them out of the chair. No more wrestling to lift them in and out!

Parents love that it’s easy to assemble, easy to fold, and easy to adjust. However, the leatherette cover is not removable for machine washing, which is a drawback. Cleaning the safety harness straps is also a challenge.

Although it’s an expensive high chair compared to others on this list, its portability, ease of use, and weight maximum mean that it will be the only high chair you’ll ever need to buy.

Graco DuoDiner High Chair: Best for Ease of Use

Graco DuoDiner High Chair
  • 6 Growing Stages from Infant Highchair to Seating 2 Kids at Once
  • Stage 1: Infant Highchair with 3 Position Recline provides the right position for baby’s comfort
  • Stage 2: Traditional Highchair with a machine washable seat pad

Pros
Cons
  • One hand fold.
  • Ultra-slim, freestanding, compact fold.
  • Grows with your child.
  • Machine washable seat cover.
  • Great price.
  • Upright seat position is not straight enough for some.

The Graco DuoDiner High Chair is full-size high chair that easily folds down for super easy storage.

It boasts a one-second, one-hand fold and, when folded, it can stand on its own. It’s a sturdy, lightweight chair with three reclining positions for use from newborn up to toddler.

Unlike the Joovy high chair, it’s designed for easy cleaning. Just wipe down the seat or remove the seat pad for machine washing.

The best part feature of the DuoDiner is that it can grow with your child, offering 6 stages of seating, from reclined high chair to booster seat and youth stool. While other foldable high chairs offer multiple stages of growth, few do so at this price point.

Some parents find that their child may still not sit up completely straight in the upright position. However, the DuoDiner does a lot compared to other foldable high chairs for a very reasonable price.

Maxi-Cosi 6-in-1 Minla High Chair: Best Convertible Foldable High Chair

Maxi-Cosi 6-in-1 Minla High Chair
  • THE HIGH CHAIR THAT CHANGES AS MUCH AS THEY DO The stylish Minla 6-in-1 High Chair is full of possibilities. Its 6 modes and variations are designed to keep up with your kiddo’s growth spurts and new skills in the years ahead.
  • SMART, ADJUSTABLE DESIGN 9 height and 5 recline positions, plus 4 tray positions, allow you to use Minla as an infant high chair, a feeding high chair, a feeding booster, a dining booster, a dining high chair, and as a supportive stool for your big kid.
  • MESSES CLEAN UP QUICKLY Minla is a parent’s dream to clean. The liquid-repellant fabric is made for spills, and you can toss the zip-off seat pad in the washing machine. Pop the removable snack tray in the dishwasher and wipe down the rest.
  • SLIM AND COMPACT, TO STOW OR GO Minla’s slim, compact fold helps you save space when you need to tuck it away, or take it with you to a friend’s dinner party or the grandparents’ house for fun family holidays.
Pros
Cons
  • Versatile adjustability which can used in different ways up to 6 years of age.
  • No need to buy an additional booster seat.
  • Expensive.
  • Limited color or design options.

The Maxi-Cosi 6-in-1 Minla High Chair is the most expensive on this list, but there’s a reason for it. Investing in this convertible high chair when your child is a newborn should hopefully mean you won’t need to buy additional high chairs, travel chairs, or booster seats until your child has outgrown the need for them.

The Minla has six modes to meet your child’s needs from newborn to age six. With five recline positions and nine adjustable heights, this chair can be used in a multitude of ways for infants and weaning babies.

Keep the seat on the frame to use it as a booster seat for toddlers. However, the seat also detaches to be used as a booster seat on an adult chair, with or without the removable tray.

Finally, it can be converted into a comfortable child’s stool for big kids, perfect for their room or desk.

In addition to all of those great features, its seat pad fabric is liquid repellant and also removable and machine washable for easy cleaning.

It does look a little like a car seat and has limited color options for your decor, but given all this chair can do, its looks are a minor drawback.

Why Should You Buy a Folding High Chair?

Baby sitting in baby chair and played with toy.

A folding high chair is a must if space in your kitchen or dining room is limited. Many high chairs may look great, but a bulky design with wide legs can take up a lot of room and get in your way.

Most folding high chairs are slimmer, so they’re easy to store in a kitchen pantry or against the wall in the dining room.

In addition, you can take a folding high chair with you if you need it, for example, for dinner at grandma’s house.

Safety
  • Look for a secure three or five-point safety harness and safe folding mechanisms that little fingers can’t get into.
Comfort
  • For mealtimes minus the fussiness, comfort is important.
  • Look for padded seats and chair backs and padded harness straps.
Longevity
  • Convertible high chairs can last from infancy through toddlerhood and even turn into booster chairs or regular chairs your child can use at the table or their desk.
  • Think about how long you’d like to use the chair and what you need it to do.
Ease of cleaning
  • Wipe-clean surfaces, removable trays, and removable, machine-washable padding will all make cleaning a messy high chair easier.
  • Fewer corners and mechanisms means fewer hard-to-clean areas.
Tray
  • For ease of use and cleaning, look for adjustable, removable trays.
  • Dishwasher-safe trays are a big plus.
  • Included cup holder means less throwing bottles and cups on the floor.
Portability
  • Wheels are useful, but make sure they have locking brakes.
  • Compact folding chairs are easy to store and take with you.
Ease of assembly
  • If it’s hard to put together, chances are it will be hard to fold, take apart, and clean.
Cost
  • When considering the cost of your high chair, consider how long you’ll be using it to see if it’s worth the expense.

High Chair Safety

Regardless of which high chair you decide to buy, there are a few basic safety guidelines to remember:

  • Never leave a baby unattended in their high chair.
  • Always use the safety harness when your child is in the chair.
  • Always follow height and weight minimums and maximums for your chair.
  • Use a sturdy, stable high chair that will not tip over easily.
  • Keep high chairs away from walls and table edges so your baby doesn’t try to push off or away from them.
  • Always lock the wheels on a portable high chair when in use.
  • When folding, unfolding, or cleaning your high chair, keep your distance from your baby so little fingers and toes don’t get trapped.
  • Make sure your baby is sitting upright when eating.
  • Always follow manufacturers’ instructions for assembly and cleaning.
